Ahinney Slate [Irish]. This was a medium sized quarry near Windgap on the Tipperary / Kilkenny border. The slates are Blue/grey in colour and are similar in texture and appearance to Portmadoc Welsh grey slates and CUPA Spanish natural slate.
Best matches in the CUPA Pizarras range are quarries Cupa Campo ( 98 ) and Valdacal ( 5 ). Most Ahinney roofs will be slated with 24x12, 24x14 and 20x12's. Occasionally 26" & 27" Randoms will appear. These old blue/grey slates adorn many roofs in the South East of Ireland. Geologically younger than Bangors and Killaloes. Only small quantities of Ahinneys are available for secondhand use. However near perfect matching is available with new natural slates from the Cupa Natural Slate range with quarries 5 and 98 being the closest match in colour and appearance.
