Fire hearths, Flooring, PavingAlthough natural slate is most commonly used for roofing, it is also increasingly used for other building and architectural applications, including cladding, flooring and paving tiles, hard landscaping products, sills, copings and natural slate worktops. With its unique combination of aesthetic and technical qualities, natural slate has long been a favourite building stone with architects, designers, builders and landscapers. Architectural Slate Products: Slate Cladding - Small slates for vertical cladding laid either on battens or affixed with lime mortar. This slate cladding system is a traditional feature in West Cork and provides walls and chimneys which are dampness free and look beautiful. Slate Fire Hearths - 30mm thick. 1800 x 600mm, 1500 x 600mm, 1200 x 600mm. Riven finish or can also be Honed ( fine rubbed ). Slate hearths can be sealed with a specialist slate sealant to provide an easy-clean surface. Sealants will darken the natural colour of the slate. Natural slate has been used for generations for its resistance to fiery fragments dropping from stoves. Even though natural slate is very strong, nonetheless it should be solidly bedded to prevent cracking from the weight of stoves.
Slate Walling and Landscaping - Extremely popular as a building stone in Quarry regions worldwide. You can achieve extraordinary features with slate blocks which will split as thin as 10MM for walling. Slate walls are almost waterproof because the slate water absorption is less than .6 %. Easily sawn to the width of a brick [ 4" ] and any depth or a variety of depths can be used to give a random appearance. Mortar joints are normally recessed to show the true colour of the slate. Slate Sills and Copings- Made to special order. The big advantage of slate cills and copings is their frost resistance and the natural ability of true slate to split along a straight line. Natural slate is easily cut and drilled to be fixed with stainless steel fixings for decades of long life. Best quality natural slate is colour durable and practically maintenance -free. Slate Worktops and Counters - Made to special order. Honed [ fine rubbed ] slabs of slate have been used for counter tops, desks, vanity units and a multitude of other uses in commercial and domestic applications for decades.
