Portmadoc Roof Slates (Welsh)
Grey colour slate quarried in Ffestiniog valley and shipped through the port of Portmadogh (very few to Ireland) most went to England, where it was far more popular than the Bangor heather colour, and also to other world markets.
This appearance can be perfectly matched today with Spanish natural slates from a number of their quarries so hence very poor secondhand values.
Portmadoc Slate (Welsh)
Portmadoc Welsh grey slates were quarried near Ffestiniog in North Wales. They were shipped from Port Madog hence the name. The slates have a flat surface and are blue/grey colour. Most were sized slates 20×10, 20×12, 22×12, 24×12 and 24×14.
Although producing large quantities, Welsh Portmadoc slates suffered two main disadvantages, compared to Welsh Bangors, as far as the Irish market was concerned. Firstly their blue/grey colour was very close to the Irish quarries producing blue/grey slates such as Binn Dubh, Roscarbery, Cork, Ahinney at Carrick-on-Suir, Tipperary and Convoy, Donegal. Secondly the port at Portmadogh was not proximate to the Liverpool -Dublin shipping lane in comparison to the port of Bangor on the north coast of Wales.
The picture on the right shows the re-roof of King House in Boyle Co Roscommon which we supplied in the 1980’s.
Another outstanding and beautiful example is the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham Dublin which was re-roofed in the late 1970’s with Greaves Portmadoc slates.
