Portmadoc Welsh grey slates were quarried near Ffestiniog in North Wales. They were shipped from Port Madog hence the name. The slates have a flat surface and are blue/grey colour. Most were sized slates 20x10, 20x12, 22x12, 24x12 and 24x14. Although producing large quantities, they suffered 2 disadvantages as far as the Irish market was concerned - Grey colour was very close to the Irish quarries producing grey slates such as Binn Dubh, Ahinney and Convoy and 2nd the port was not proximate to the Liverpool -Dublin shipping lane in comparison to Bangor on the north coast of Wales.
The picture on the right is King House in Boyle Co Roscommon which we supplied about 15 years ago. The other beautiful example is the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham Dublin which was re-roofed in the late 1970's with Greaves Portmadoc slates.
